"Hollybush”
Summit 40th
Anniversary
Forty years ago, in the Hollybush
Mansion on the grounds of then Glassboro
State College (now
Rowan University),
U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and
Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin met face
to face for an historic two-day summit
meeting (*) to debate their opposing
views on the 1967 Arab-Israeli Six-Day
War and discuss the perils of the
nuclear arms race.
-
(* On June 23 and 25, 1967, Johnson
and Kosygin met face to face at
then-Glassboro State College to
discuss the Arab-Israeli Six-Day
War, which found them on opposing
sides, and other world issues. While
Johnson and Kosygin did not sign a
formal agreement, they did
acknowledge that the Glassboro
Summit was successful, and the
Summit helped start to ease some
Cold War tensions.)
-
During this 40th anniversary year,
Rowan University will hold a series
of events that focus on issues that
faced the world then and face it
now, including a symposium on
nuclear nonproliferation.
