“Tidal Wave” - The Great Appalachian
Storm of 1950
Nov. 9th Program for Upper Twp. Historical Society
The Historical Preservation
Society of Upper Twp. November membership meeting program will be a
presentation by Rachel Dolhancyzk and Drew Tomlin on the book “Tidal
Wave - The Great Appalachian Storm of 1950 and Its Impact on New
Jersey’s Bayshore Towns” on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, 7 pm, at the Upper
Township Wellness Senior Center, 1369 Stagecoach Road, Ocean View, New
Jersey 08230.
Due to Covid-19 concerns, masks are required
for all attendees.
November 25th, 1950 is a day that the New
Jersey Bayshore residents have never forgotten.
On that fateful day,
storm conditions resulted in a devastating tidal wave that destroyed
communities and took lives. 15 people along the Delaware Bayshore died
that day and approximately 2,500 people were displaced. Homes were
destroyed, boats and vehicles floated away, and property damage was
devastating. Residents carried their memories of this event with them as
time went on, and many still share their stories with one another, their
families and friends.
As years passed, the events of Nov. 25, 1950
became the best-known “secret” of the Bayshore area.
The book Tidal
Wave” documents firsthand accounts of the coastal storm and serves as a
cautionary tale concerning disaster preparedness, poor housing practices
and environmental injustice here in southern New Jersey.
The
presenters will have copies of the book available for purchase at
presentation. “Tidal Wave” is also available online for purchase in
advance at the following link:

The
Harriet Tubman Museum website explains her life and work in Cape May:
“Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the
early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people
to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to
Canada, her friend and abolitionist leader Franklin Sanborn wrote, “She
returned to the states, and as usual earned money by working in hotels
and families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went
back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives.” The
New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in
Cape May.”
The Museum website also
reviews Cape May’s role as a nexus between North and South and how the
area played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery.

Harriet Tubman Museum website for other information.
