Author: Hal Taylor
The
Historical Preservation
Society of Upper
Township membership
meeting for Tuesday, May
14, 2024, at 7 pm will
feature a program about
the book “Delaware
River” by Hal Taylor.
The
shores of the Delaware
River form the boundary
of four states in a
region that is one of
the most historic in the
country.
Author and illustrator
Hal Taylor’s program for
the HPSUT takes us on a
journey up the “Great
American River” from
Cape May, past the
scenic Bayshore and
picturesque lighthouses,
to forts used during the
Revolution and the Civil
War.
The
book will also take us
past major industrial
and cultural centers, up
through the majestic
Water Gap and to its
source in the Catskill
Mountains of New York
state.
Join us! May 14th, 7 pm,
at the Upper Township
Wellness / Senior
Center, 1369 Stagecoach
Rd, Ocean View, NJ.

Mary Treat, A Biography
Author: Deborah
Boerner Ein
Mary Treat was a
little-known woman
scientist who in the mid
1800’s was so passionate
about the natural world
that she even
corresponded often with
Charles Darwin. Mary
lived in Vineland, as
she studied flora and
fauna, and insects,
often using the Pine
Barrens as her
workplace.
We welcome
Deborah Boerner Ein,
the author of
Mary Treat, a Biography,
to speak to the
Historical Preservation
Society of Upper
Township (HPSUT) about
her in-depth research on
Mary Treat, which
includes the use of
personal letters with
family and Darwin that
were bequeathed to the
Vineland Historical and
Antiquarian Society.

UT Historical Society
Spring 2024 Bus Trip
Features Sites
in Northern New Jersey
This year’s
Spring bus trip,
sponsored by the
Historical Preservation
Society of Upper Twp.
(HPSUT), will take place
on Saturday and Sunday,
April 27th & 28th,
2024.
By popular
demand, we’ll start our
trip with a visit to the
Stirling Hill Mining
Museum.
From the 1830’s
until the 1960’s, this
area of New Jersey was
one of the largest areas
for the mining of zinc.
We’ll also be
visiting Historic
Speedwell in Morristown,
the Cooper Grist Mill in
Chester and, in an “if
at first you don’t
succeed” moment, we’ll
visit the Bouman
Stickney House that was
on the trip last year
but whose visit was
spoiled by a downed tree
that took out the
driveway and power to
the house.
We’ll leave the
Acme parking lot in Cape
May Court House at 8:00,
with a stop in Oceanview
(Seaville Acme parking
lot), and head for
Stirling Hill Mining
Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ
for our only stop on
Saturday.
We’ll then head
south to Hackettstown
for dinner and to our
hotel for the night.
We’ll be having
dinner at the Taphouse
Grille and staying at
the Quality Inn in
Hackettstown.
Sunday, April 28th,
we’ll start our day with
a short drive to
Historic Speedwell for a
tour and the true story
of Samuel B. Morse of
Morse Code fame.
Another short
drive to the grist mill
and lunch and then we’ll
head for home with a
stop at the Bouman
Stickney site in
Readington on the way.
Proceeds from
this year’s trip will
benefit the Historical
Preservation Society of
Upper Township.
The cost is $265
per person if you’re
sharing a room, $345 if
you’re rooming alone.
This is $20 more
than last year but
unfortunately the cost
of dinner and the hotel
are more this year.
Registration
deadline is April 15th.
