HPSUT June Membership Program

Tuesday, June 13, 2023, 7 pm
Saints and Sinners:  New Jersey Women
 in America's Civil War

American women participated in the Civil War in many roles, some far outside the usual perception of women of that era.  We hear almost nothing about these women in our traditional history classes.

In this presentation, learn about New Jersey women and others, the Saints and Sinners, who rallied for abolition, supported the Union cause and assumed non-traditional roles in an effort to keep the Republic together…or not.

Presenter Pary Tell, is the Treasurer of the League of the Societies of New Jersey and chairs the Lower Township NJ Historic Preservation Commission as well as the Cape History Coalition.

Join with us! June 13th, 7 pm at the Upper Township Wellness / Senior Center 1369 Stagecoach Rd, Ocean View, NJ

2023 HPSUT History Bus Tour

CG Lifeboat
Coast Guard Lifeboat CG-36538

U-Twp. Historical Society April 12th program
on Coast Guard Lifeboat CG-36538 Restoration

Members and friends of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township will meet Tuesday, April 12, 2022, 7 pm, for a special program about the restoration of the Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat CG-36538.
The meeting will be held at the Upper Township Wellness / Senior Center, 1369 Stagecoach Rd., Ocean View NJ 08230

This is the second in-person meeting for the Society’s 2022 program year.
Please RSVP with the Society’s April 12th Eventbrite page > https://UpperTwpHistory.eventbrite.com
There is no charge for this program. Please note that this is an in-person event and Zoom capability will not be available.
Program:
The Cape May Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving the United States Coast Guard and commercial maritime history of the Cape May, NJ area.
Cape May Maritime Museum’s current undertaking is the tedious restoration of the Motor Lifeboat CG-36538 by a dedicated group of skilled volunteers. The goal is to maintain the historical accuracy, design and look of the original motor lifeboat and to also make it seaworthy. The lifeboat is presently located in an indoor facility in the Cape May, NJ area and is open to the public for guided tours by appointment.
History:
The Motor Lifeboat CG-36538 was constructed in 1952 and remained in service until 1972. This TRS type boat was the last wood-hulled coastal lifeboat developed by the United States Coast Guard and the first to use laminated wood. The CG-36538 served at the Atlantic Beach Station in New York and then at the Ocean City Station in New Jersey. During its tenure at the Great Harbor Inlet Station, from 1966 through 1972, the lifeboat was used primarily for winter rescues as well as winter assistance calls.
Cape May Maritime Museum volunteers have reported that the boat was found tucked in the corner of a Navy warehouse in Yorktown, VA and is one of only a handful still in existence. Records show it was built at a shipyard in Curtis Bay, MD [Baltimore].
For additional information about the boat, see the Cape May Maritime Museum > www.cmmaritime.org

Canceled - Saturday 9/23 Tuckahoe Transportation Heritage Festival

The coastal storm that is forecasted to effect Tuckahoe and southern New Jersey makes it impossible to go forward with the 6th Tuckahoe Transportation Heritage Festival.
So much work has been invested by many of us in the months, weeks and days building up to making this Festival happen - but the weather is out of our control.
The Festival partners are exploring dates to reschedule - if possible it would be early November.

HPSUT 2023 PROGRAMS

Tuesday, June 13, 2023, 7 pm
Saints and Sinners:  New Jersey Women in the Civil War

Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, 7 pm
 Beginning Your Family Research

Casey G. Zahn will teach how to begin family research, and uncover family stories through helpful resources including: census records, newspapers, passenger records, and the hidden treasures you have at home.

Join us! May 9th, 7 pm at the Upper Township Wellness / Senior Center 1369 Stagecoach Rd, Ocean View, NJ

Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, 7 pm
McCarty’s Paper Mill: From Bog Iron to Paper in the N.J. Pine Barrens

The author of this intriguing book, Angelo Dellomo, will tell us how Mc Carty’s Paper Mill fills a gap in Pine Barrens ghost town history weaving a story of “McCarty’s village, its paper mill, and the events in the life of the man whose vision became reality.”

Join us! May 9th, 7 pm at the Upper Township Wellness / Senior Center 1369 Stagecoach Rd, Ocean View, NJ

We will be touring historic Dutch sites around the state.

Some of the sites were the beginnings of industry in the state while others were important sites during the Revolution.
The bus trip benefits the HPSUT.
Final plans are still being made, but the cost of the trip will be in the $250 - $300 range.
The cost of the trip will include admission to all sites, lunch and dinner on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday, a room on Saturday night and the bus cost and the driver’s tip.
Your only cost will be any souvenirs you decide to pick up and dinner on the way home on Sunday at one of the rest stops on the Parkway.
